Music remains in the air. In these times, when fear and uncertainty weigh heavily on us, music has become an even more essential refuge for our fragile society. Intangible, powerful, inspiring, and ephemeral, music is that bright instant we find in the darkness—a glimmer of hope. Difficult experiences teach us that when the foundations of what is familiar begin to crack, we must hold tightly to the things we love: to the melodies we carry in our hearts, to familiar scents, to comforting environments.
I write these lines to present a pair of videos that have just come to light, part of a project we launched a couple of years ago. Ezust Duo is a fusion project, a combination of two polyphonic instruments, both keyboard-based but with very different histories and traditions—two poles that attract and at the same time complement each other. These instruments are adept at accompanying others and are also ideal for exploring a broad solo repertoire. Their combination, however, is quite uncommon, which is precisely why Garazi Navas Mundiñano and I decided to embrace this duo.
The group was formed in 2019 at Musikene (Higher School of Music of the Basque Country), and we play music without stylistic boundaries—a repertoire of great sensitivity that reflects, with finesse and elegance, the cultural richness of today’s world, full as it is of contrasts.
We would like to use this text to thank Kulturaz, the Azpeitia Cultural Cooperative, and the team at Igartza Palace in Beasain, who accompanied us on the journey that made the recording of both videos possible. If, upon listening to these pieces, you feel—even slightly—the joy and fulfillment we experienced while preparing and recording them, we will be more than satisfied.
